Your Role and Responsibilities

IBM Cloud, provides cloud infrastructure as a service from a growing number of data centers and network points of presence around the world. Our customers range from Web startups to global enterprises



The Backbone Support Engineer Technical Lead role requires a well-organized, action-oriented team player with exceptional time management and strong written and oral communication skills to drive customer facing support issues in a fast paced environment. The candidate must be a senior-level backbone network engineer, who can focus on improving overall customer experience by contributing to the growth of other staff within the team. The team lead role requires excellent collaboration with team members, other organizations, key stakeholders and business partners to meet the needs of the business as well as that of the customers.



Key tasks include:Liaison to Network Engineering for knowledge transfer of new product/technologies

Technical mentorship for other members of the Backbone Support Engineering team

Create and maintain network connectivity diagrams and other documentation of live network environments

Act as first point-of-escalation within the Backbone Support Engineering team for technical issues on a 24x7 rotation

Set the technical direction when working with customers to identify and remediate issues on the network

Create training documentation and SoPs, and provide oversight and peer review of documents and SoPs written by other team members

Plays a critical role in maintaining the global infrastructure for our Cloud Computing service, comprised of over 50,000 network devices







Required Technical and Professional Expertise

Bachelors in Science degree in a computer technology field or equivalent experience





Five or more years working on large-scale service provider networks





One of the following Certifications or equivalent expertise: Juniper Networks Certified Internet Expert (JNCIE) or Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE).





Advanced proficiency in network protocols/technologies: Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), IPv4/6 addressing, 10GigE & 100GigE, Dark fiber and DWDM Systems.





Advanced configuration of Juniper routers





Effectively utilize "remote hands" assistance within datacenter and carrier hotel environments for items such as fault isolation, installation/test of structured cabling/cross-connects and troubleshooting physical equipment











Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

Demonstrated history of organization and time management skills





Demonstrated history of verbal and written communication skills





Ability to work remotely with little or no direct supervision





Exhibit a strong understanding of customer service





Must be self-motivated and disciplined





Ability to recognize and prioritize critical tasks independently
