JOB TITLE: Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant-In Graduate School

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education PAY GRADE: In accordance with salary schedule

Or Designee approved by Board (187 Days)

DEPARTMENT: Special Education DATE REVISED: February 2019

This position is not eligible for a Chapter 21 contract. A Letter of Assurance will be issued.

PRIMARY PURPOSE: To provide speech and language services and appropriate intervention services to eligible students under the direction of a licensed supervisor. To maintain speech and language special education records and documentation as directed by licensed supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

* Bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university (or Bachelor's degree plus courses required to obtain the SLP-Assistant License) * Evidence of acceptance to a graduate degree program for Speech-Language Pathology * Evidence of continued enrollment and adequate performance in a graduate degree program for Speech-Language Pathology * Valid Texas license as a speech-language therapy assistant granted by the Texas Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology

Special Knowledge/Skills

* Bilingual proficiency as defined by Irving ISD requirements for Supplemental Duty and Pay, preferred * Knowledge of habilitation and rehabilitation of speech, language, and hearing disorders * Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills * Ability to travel to multiple work locations as assigned

Minimum Experience:

Minimum of 50 hours of observation and direct clinical service as directed by the Assistant's License requirements

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Program Management:

* Plan and provide appropriate individual and group therapy to students consistent with speech/language goals contained in the Individual Education Plans (IEPs) under the direction of the licensed supervisor. * Participate in annual Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings if approved by the licensed supervisor and requirements set forth in the licensing board have been met. * Provide consultation and direct intervention services under the direction of SLP supervisor. * Participate in determining student progress and readiness for termination of therapy services under the direction of an SLP Supervisor. * Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and implement classroom based activities to improve oral and written language skills of students under the direction of the licensed supervisor. * Attend speech therapy meetings as directed. * Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records and other documents required. * Administer routine tests as directed by the licensed supervisor when the supervisor has assured proper training and administration of such tests. * Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules and State Board of examiners Licensing Board for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. * Other duties as assigned.

* Respond to needs related to job responsibilities. * Assist in the selection of materials, equipment, and other instructional material.

Student Management:

* Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of students. * Establish control and administer discipline according to board policies and administrative regulations.

Professional Growth and Development:

* Develop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignment. * Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible. * Demonstrate by submitting official transcripts in June of each year successful completion of coursework in a graduate program indicating progress toward completion of a degree required for licensure as a speech language pathologist in Texas.

School or Community Relations:

* Articulate the District's mission and goals in the area of speech therapy to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission. * Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs. * Demonstrate the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.

Safety

Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.

Mental/Emotional Demands

* Maintain emotional control under stress and during emergency situations * Effectively present information and respond appropriately to questions from employees, administrators, regulatory agencies, vendors, and/or the general public * Communicate effectively with medical providers * Analyze and effectively handle problems involving limited concrete variables in standardized situations * Utilize fundamental reasoning skills to carry out detailed written and/or oral instructions * Maintain composure at accident scenes

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

* Numerous interruptions of tasks * Prolonged sitting * Occasional lifting and/or moving items up to 20 pounds * Repetitive hand motions * Occasional walking and standing * Changes to outdoor climate exposures - hot, humid, cold, wet, windy, etc.
