The Director of User Interface/User Experience, will need to walk in with the ability to tell a good story, have an artistic, visual nature and be well versed in good, modern design aesthetics. You will be building a team for new Michaels digital initiatives, which means you will need to implement best design practices both artistically and for process - integrating with operational and other stakeholder teams utilizing modern delivery pipelines. You will manage and mentor the UI and UX and digital design teams in all areas of work - from concept through launch, working collaboratively and cross-functionally with development teams to deliver beautiful, functional, intuitive designs and user experiences for Michaels digital initiatives. As a successful Director of User Interface/User Experience, you will have a strong, proven record of success in driving multiple creative projects - with a deep understanding of how creative work flows in context to delivery deadlines and go live requirements. You will be able to be an effective communicator both to the C-suite executives as well as your delivery and partner delivery teams - sharing and implementing your vision across multiple initiatives, managing expectations, conflicts and delivery promises. Demonstrate ambition and passion for beautifully crafted, intuitive designs of the highest quality and usability.
  • Lead, mentor and coach team of UI/UX across research, conceptual design, prototyping, detailed design, usability testing, and implementation
  • Partner with Product Management and Engineering to align UI/UX vision and activities with Michaels business goals
  • Collaborate with user researchers to validate and test ideas. Improve research, design, and development processes to gain efficiency, remove obstacles, and simplify problems
  • Advocate the role of user experience design across the organization and make user experience design recommendations based on usability standards and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with leadership to set UX/UI product vision and strategy
  • Stay current on industry trends, landscape changes, and competitor moves, communicate that data to executives to constantly refine strategy in an iterative environment.
  • Ensure direct reports are delivering designs that are aligned with Michaels objectives and priorities by fostering collaboration between teams, partnering, and creating a cross-functional environment to achieve goals.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelors degree in a UX-related field (Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Behavioral Research, Graphic Design) or equivalent practical experience.

Minimum Special Certifications or Technical Skills

  • Experience in usability standards, design heuristics, and responsive design techniques

Minimum Type of Experience the Job Requires

  • 12 years of experience leading UI/UX design teams
  • 12 years of experience as a UI/UX designer working on web, mobile or desktop applications

Preferred Requirements

  • Bachelors degree, Masters degree, PhD in degrees related to design, psychology or related field.
  • Demonstrated leadership in communicating research, conceptual ideas, and design rationale within a user-centered design process
  • Experience leading high performing team of highly skilled resources
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in designing for multi-device experiences, including tablet and smartphone
  • Experience with user-centered research (e.g., usability testing, contextual inquiry, field interviews)
